Who are the judges this year? I hope i-clickers are not used again

We are still on the hunt for judges. iClickers will be used again this year, but as a reminder they are only a portion of the judgement of the semifinalists. The judges hold more sway.

What rules are there in terms of sexuality or swearing (specifically in terms of creative writing).

Sexuality and swearing are both permitted in the creative piece as long as they are not offensive or excessive. I can’t really tell you a specific guideline of what is and what is not acceptable, so if you just want to send in your submission I could judge whether it is acceptable or not based on the guidelines of Titles Bookstore and McMaster University. Hope that helps.

Hi! When you stated submission date, does that mean people can start sending them in on the 24th, or the voting period starts on the 24th? Thanks!

Why is my submission not showing up?

Probably just a delay between when you entered and when I updated the gallery.

I made a submission today but the emailed bounced back saying that the delivery to the host failed permanently… What do I do??

Hopefully you are the Brian who has submitted a piece so you have gotten through… if not then just keep trying to email titles.marketing@gmail.com – if it is consistently failing then perhaps you are attaching an image too large, spelling the email account wrong, etc. I cannot think of why else it would fail.

There’s a large misconception that the thumbnail IS the final product, which creates an imbalance for actual digital art and written piece which can get a high quality picture from anywhere on the internet. Either correct his inconsistent flaw or make it clear with an icon what each submission is ON the voting page gallery.

The thumbnails are what the contest participants have chosen. Everyone has been given the same guidelines and suggestions through the contest rules and the Art of Self Promotion. This is not an imbalance. People should be viewing the entry itself instead of voting on the thumbnails anyway, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Isn’t there an unfair advantage? I emailed my submission at the beginning of the entry time, all the ones that got to be posted ahead of time already have a lot of votes. The voting shouldn’t be allowed until everyone’s submission is listed, to make it fair. I’m still not seeing mine.

Can you explain what is meant by the use of the i-clickers?

    • admin
      Posted February 29, 2012 at 11:47 am | Permalink

The use of iClickers is to give the audience a chance to vote for the semifinalists. On March 9 the five semifinalists will present their creative pieces – most likely in the atrium of the student centre – and 5 hand picked judges will score the semifinalists. Anyone in the audience can also vote for the 5 semifinalists using an iClicker, and the collective vote for a given semifinalist counts as half a judge’s scoring.

Are the iClickers provided for the audience?

No, you need to bring your own iClicker.

Is it a typo that voting ends on the 4th? Isn’t it the 9th, right before the judging?

    • admin

No it is not a typo. The original dates were that the contest public voting was from Feb. 24 to Mar. 2, and then the showdown would happen on Mar. 9, a week after public voting closed. Public voting has been extended two days until Mar. 4.

I don’t get it….why does voter turn out matter? I’m sure no body was interested in showing up for -another- audience vote….couldn’t the contest continue with the judges, like stated in the initial contest rules before this iClicker business came about?

Also, that’s nice that everyone got a reward, but it’s not fair to those who worked hard on their submission…how is it justified that people put in different amounts of effort and time and the prize is shared equally?

This is really bad planning on Titles’ part. And a really, really disappointing outcome. It still doesn’t seem right that the contest was called off for “lack of interest/voter turnout”. There are ways to continue with the contest without raising a huge hooplah in MUSC about it…

I’m just very confused by the entire ordeal. Sad.

It is sad. Low voter turn out actually refers to the number of votes in the contest. Voter turn out matters because it is one measure of the interaction and success of the overall project. With little interest it becomes an incredible amount of time and resources to put into something that is not very effective. We can’t run promotions or contests like this one without being accountable to our sponsors and without considering what other projects can’t be completed if we have exhausted our time and resources. It is truly unfortunate and a difficult decision to have to make.

I still don’t understand….what stops the release of the initial contest prizes?
Does the number of votes determine some kind of funding for the prizes?
What constitutes a high voter turnout? There was easily 700+ voters…the top 6 all had 100+ votes.

I just don’t get why the showdown could not have continued, and the prizes given out anyway. Because of the poor turnout and whatnot, the contest should probably be reconsidered for next year, instead of disappointing those that worked tirelessly on this side to create the artwork and garner voters’ attention.

I’m not satisfied with this decision, and while I understand nothing can be rectified for this year, I still would appreciate knowing why these decisions were made. I think we are at least owed that much.
